[*] A family with a stay-at-home mom - he could be at work
[*] A family with 2 parents working 9-5 - maybe the dad is golfing
[*] A family where mom and dad work different shifts - she leaves when dad gets home
[*] Single mother - something more and more common
By having a dad in the picture, you might lose the connection to the story, especially for the single mothers. While single dad families and two-dad families are out there, they’re fewer than the single mother families, so the book can reach a larger group.

Perhaps dad may appear in one of the sequels.
As it is though, not showing or including a father may be all right too.
The reality is that many families are headed by a single parent. Seeing two parent families may increase feelings of longing or loss for kids who don't have a dad present in their lives.
