It was more of an ally. It was also an essential tool for Silver.

When Franklin turned on Sliver and wanted to turn him in, I was genuinely upset. I felt like one of my favourite characters had just turned into a traitor. It was well done on Gariffo's part.
Franklin was definitely a main character.

I certainly took Franklin to be a character in his own right, no doubt! He brings a very interesting and humorous twist to the whole story. This is probably how AI robots will be in the (near) future. Computers will think for us as we just hang around and hit buttons.
I agree the fact that th

Franklin was my favorite character! I thought it was a great way to mix in some humor, as well as to show that Sliver can connect emotionally even before he met Kelly. I also thought it was hilarious that Sliver changed his name with every comment at the beginning.

I actually viewed FRANKLIN as more of a character and less of a tool. His usefulness was duely noted in silver's life.

i think he was brought to be a separate character, but he ended up being equipment. there was a lot of dialogue that could have fleshed out the characters much more, but the author decided to write 100 pages of articles. ;)

Though functioning as a tool for Sliver, I think that Franklin was a character as he helped move the story and had interactions with other characters outside of his mission. Franklin was perhaps one of my favorite characters despite being AI.

I definitely view Franklin as a character! He was witty and likeable, even if he was just following orders and unable to decide his own path. Although he was a tool for Sliver in a sense, he also made a connection with Kelly which helped the relationship with Sliver and Kelly. Had Franklin not been the way he was I don't feel that things would have changed and developed as they did between Sliver and Kelly.
Also, Sliver actually deciding on a name for Franklin definitely helped him to be viewed as a character rather than just an AI that was used by Sliver.

Rex is as much a character because he's an extension of agent Silver. To put that in perspective in current times, I could liken that relationship to the one that most people have with their cell phones.

Well, depending on one's opinion on the validity of a sentient code, one could say Franklin was simply following his programming. On the other hand, I like to think he truly was a good supporting character aside from just being a sharp tool of an object, in a sense of the word. He also reminds me a little of Eddie the ship computer from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I saw the interface as another character. When the ship went down and he wasn't speaking, I felt as if a character had died. I was so happy when the ship was fixed and the interface was back online.

I feel like the fact that the AI had its own personality touches on the idea (and for many, the fear) that robots and AI will takeover. Will we have to grant rights to AI? Should we treat them as robots or as people? What is your answer based on getting to "know" Agent Silver's AI?
