Catrin's twin sister?

so catrin has a twin sister who died when they were twelve? That seemed glossed over. Did I somehow misread that or is that one of the most random things in a book? Did it have any effect on her?

I agree that it was glossed over. Seren was casually mentioned and that she died of a fever after being branded by Agrona. Maybe it will be more of an issue in book two and the author was setting it up that there was a twin at one point.

Interesting idea that Seren's importance may emerge in the following books. Agrona's motivation might emerge as well; that is, did she purposely cause the death or was it accidental? Ah, there are so many possibilities.

Oh, right. I totally forgot about her. It's interesting how there's another topic called "Vala, the least established princess" when really it's Seren who's the forgotten one. In fact, I searched for her name in the book and it only appears twice.

Twice right near each other I presume. That is weak foreshadowing. It is too important of information to gloss over. I assume it was added after the book was already finished, and plans for number two were underway.

I actually didn't notice that. Anyway, I believe her death was inconsequential to Cartrin's maturity and development.

This character’s introduction was one of the flaws in how the plot was laid out. We first hear about her existence, what, 85% of the way through?

If she is supposed to be relevant to Catrin or Rhiannon, why do we hear about her so late in the plot?

It read to me like a last minute reason added to explain Rhiannon’s attitude during the novel. Perhaps the author didn’t intend that, but it did not come across as a well-planned detail.

Not quite that far as I'm only 66% through, but yeah, this seemed the most random and irrelevant reveal so far.

Yeah, I totally forgot about her until someone brought it up on this forum. Was she really 12 when she died?

Ah, okay, thanks. My sense of the pacing of this novel is so off, because it was so hard to get through.

I also was really confused about that. It seemed like it was just glossed right over. As someone else said, I'm hoping it will be a prominent theme in the next book. I'm very curious to know more about her twin.

This was definitely a glossed over point. Even if this is a point that will come up later or sets the stage for some other book, it should not have been thrown out there in the way that it was. That’s the sort of thing that would seriously impact Catrin more than was ever implied, not just her mother.

Can anyone confirm the age of the twin when she died? I thought that she was younger than 12.

I agree - the loss of a twin is bound to have an effect on future character development, personality etc. It will be interesting to see if Seren plays a greater role in the next book.

I didn't notice it, maybe in the second book the author will expound on her character.
