I would definitely categorize the novel as fantasy with a heavy historical influence. If I am looking at the genre of a novel and see that is primarily historical fiction, I am less likely to notice the fantasy aspects of the novel, and thus feel somewhat deceived when discovering the mystical aspects of the tale. However, if I go into a novel expecting fantasy and see that it has strong historical elements, I don't feel nearly as misled as a reader.

It is historic romantic fiction of course, with elements of magic, shape shifting, political intrigue.

I don't read to find characters my own age to try to identify with. I'm not looking for real life when reading fiction, I want to lose myself in made up stories!

There is too much magic and shapeshifting in this book to consider it a historical novel. Therefore, I define it as historical or romantic fantasy.

If it weren't for the erotic scenes, the first genre that came to mind was young adult fantasy. This novel is much more of a fantasy novel than it is a historical fiction novel. You are not retelling events that occurred during a historical period, but are drawing from myths and legends. I would reclassify it as fantasy if possible.
There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers like a page
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of toll;
How frugal is the chariot
That bears a human soul!

I think it's a romantic historical fiction. But it also displays fantasy elements. The main focus would be historical -> romance -> fantasy

For me, the genre description that seems most accurate for this book is: fantasy with strong elements of romance and history. I initially picked up this book because its main genre was labeled as historical fiction, but given the significance of magic, spirits, and druids in this story, it felt much more like fantasy in a historical setting to me. I agree that this book is suitable for adults since it does contain several instances of profanity and scenes with explicit sexual content.

I think it starts with fantasy with the main theme with in that being a romantic story and then elements of historical fiction within that.
