He's both the protagonist as well as the antagonist. Not a single other character is strong enough to fulfill either of these roles.

I think the term anti-hero or anti-protagonist probably fits him. He's not the traditional 'good guy' but he is the central character and we are meant to appreciate his character growth

I would say he is definitely the Protagonist. throughout the story. His transformation is a classic villain with a redemptive arc story. The Antagonist is probably Paige for most of the story. She is against him and what he stands for. She had the ability to stand in the way of his goals. Although I can certainly see how many could argue Hiram is him own Antagonist.

The complexity of this story really made this book unique. At some point in the story, Hiram seemed to be the protagonist while at some point he seem to be the antagonist. This book was amazing.
