He was lonely. But his loneliness wouldn't have been enough to change how he acts towards women in general. He maybe desperate for companionship, and it may factor in for his change of behavior. But I think his changes were mainly due to the growth in his character as a human being.

Maybe a little of both. I want to think the best of him and say that he grew some compassion, but with how manipulative and egotistical he was, I'm not so sure he had evolved that much.

I think that is what makes the story so powerful. A man who treats women so poorly, learns his greatest lessons from them. I am sure to some degree, the loneliness he felt was a factor, but ultimately would he have listened if it Maud's character had been a man?

I think the change of character was due to loneliness and needing human contact.
