Re: Discuss Definition of insanity

Post by KnightReader »

There's truth to the sentiment of insanity as 'over and over.' Repeating experiments over and over without changing the variables and expecting different results is insane, and such is the same with other activities in life. Living a daily routine you are not fond of and expecting your outlook on it to change without doing anything to uplift your life a bit may be insane. There is a reason why 'hell' depicted in some media is a time loop stuck to repeat forever and usually centers around the life sin of the character stuck there. So I see why people would think that repetition in some way is insanity, the eternal spinning teacups of hell.

I agree with the author. If you keep doing the same things over and over expecting them to be different, then you are tormenting yourself. Thank you for this topic, it made me think.

I agree with this definition of insanity. Doing the same things repeatedly and expecting a different result doesn’t make sense. We need to re-evaluate and make some kind of change in order to make progress.

I think it depends on the level and variation of what you're doing repeatedly. Ultimately, if you feel as if you are wasting your time on something then that can be defined as "insanity". It's all a matter of perspective.

I agree, if you have tried multiple times to do the same thing the same way it's not going to work. You need to step back and look at the situation and then find a way to change your approach.

I fully agree. That is what most ordinary people does. They do the same thing repeatedly and expect to find different results. That definition is thought provoking and is good for the book.

I do agree. I also would like to point out that people become addicted to the chemical and emotional states that they constantly experience and will unknowingly place themselves in situations that fill those chemical needs. Breaking free of these patterns is difficult and becoming aware of them is the first step. I think the author's idea of insanity and the way he puts it forward in such a direct style is an excellent attempt at rattling those cage bars of emotional addiction.

I agree that when a way does not yield the desired result, one must change it.

That is actually something Einstein came up with. He said that insanity was doing the same thing and expecting a different result. I think that he is right, but what about hope? You do the same thing, but you have faith that this time it will work. Or you know the saying "3rd times the charm". You may do the same thing, but some variables might be different this time.

I don't agree. Now, doing the same thing and expecting different results may seem ridiculous, but I don't think it is "insane." Some people play the same lottery numbers over and over and finally win. People go fishing in the same ponds and catch more fish sometimes than others. I have lost my dogs and searched for them in the same places and eventually found them.

I believe insanity in inherently related to chemicals in the brain, and I don't think it is something to be made light of. I don't agree with the author on this.

Yes, I agree with the author's idea of insanity and it does make complete scene to me. Now, as far as will I do it... Hopefully, I can stick to it so I am definitly going to try.

I don't see how anyone can refute such valuable advice. It is true that you can't do the same thing, the same way over again and expect a different result.

Einstein's quote on insanity that the author uses in his book is very true. It not only is used in this book but it is also the cornerstone in the AA's philosophy. I think our brain tricks us into doing the same repetitive thing over and over again because humanity loves ritual and repetition, even though, quite often, it is not good for us.

I agree that this is the well-known definition of insanity, but I don't agree with it. There's lots of times things change without changing the routine, because that's life. I get that idea that change starts from within though.
