People tend to write what they know, so the author writing about his home town for the sake of familiarity makes a lot of sense.

I think it was by chance that the author chose this location.

I think that authors tend to write more about areas that they are familiar with, so I am guessing that was why this particular setting was used.

No city, state, or country is without crime. And where there's crime, there are police to combat that crime. Judicial killings are, sadly, a part of life. Some are accidental, and some, tragically, aren't. It's possible the author chose Port Jefferson because there's a lot of police corruption there. But it's just as possible the author chose this location simply because it's a setting they were most familiar with. Regardless of the reason or purpose, a work in the fiction genre always embellishes the truth. And it's impossible to know to what degree. Especially when it combines real locations with imaginary ones.

The author lives within the area. So, I think he must have a particular reason and also due to his knowledge about the area. The indigenes of the area would understand better.

I think it was a mixture of his being emotionally invested in what was happening in his local area as well as the old saying, "write what you know." I imagine it certainly made for better flow if the author was familiar with the area geographically.

Apparently because he lives near that area, he used a familiar setting instead of a fictional one.

He lives there and probably found it easier to build on societal issues that had reason to be addressed at some point, like the lack of security on the ferry, instead of having to coin up such scenarios.

I agree with you on this one.

I think it's because the author has more knowledge about the island since he lives there. And also, because he wanted to shed the light on the happenings that occur in the area.

Yes i loved the author choice of setting because it felt the plot was, more real to me since the Port Jefferson, Long island, is a village known for all those kind of crimes.

Given that the author lives not too far from the area, thus having a good idea what's obtainable there, I guess it's only natural that he selected Port Jefferson as the setting.
