ARA Review by randaljoy of In It Together
In his book In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All, author Eckhart Aurelius Hughes seeks to strip away the incumbrances and false notions that delude us and keep our “metaphorical eyes closed” from the truth that we are all fundamentally united by the spirit of love, of consciousness and by our future spiritual selves. Hughes takes a leap into this truth “to unite diverse readers of all sorts, of all cultures, religions, and belief systems, without infringing on anyone's spiritual freedom” and to show us that all the divisiveness that exists in the world is a delusion, the product of the “walking dead,” the unconscious philosophical zombies.
Hughes admits that what he talks about is dangerous to haters. Hughes shows the unity that connects us, and the love that we all fundamentally are. As he says, we are a force of love. “You, he writes, “the real you—are the uniting thread weaving through the long past version of the human you see in the mirror to the distant future version and through all the outfits in between. Such love can motivate great loving kindness, in which the human lover happily chooses to make great sacrifices in their here and now for the benefit of the would-be other, including that would-be other that is the so-called future self, meaning the older and more wrinkly version of the human you see in the mirror.” Hughes provides a way to strip away all the false notions and “things” that weigh us down and that keep us from manifesting the truth about who we are really are. His ten suggestions encourage us to strip these away and live in the truth that unites us.
I initially thought that it took Hughes too long to lead us through the path toward recognizing the truth of who we are. But, then I realized that he needed to provide adequate time and adequate references and reflections in order to peal away any blindness that we might have that would keep us from finally seeing and accepting that truth. He needed to build a reality strong enough so that we may be willing to take his suggested steps, because these steps mean stepping into a reality far different than that which we currently reside in. His suggested steps are straightforward and can be taken only after one is convinced that we are consciousness, spirit, love and not the false appurtenances we have grabbed onto.
We can let go of self-deceit delusion and denial by honestly accepting who we truly are. It is more difficult to let go of trying and fighting because these emanate from the flesh but if we keep reminding ourselves that we are spirit, are love, then these steps become possible. We can let go of moralizing and resentment and unforgiveness, even of our past self, by a spirit of acceptance out of love. Possessiveness can be released by knowing who our future spiritual self truly is. Accepting the shadow and discomfort is more challenging but love conquers all. Living in the present helps us manifest the love toward all and helps us slow down and not overcommit.
Hughes message is so needed in our world right now and is a message we all need to individually absorb and live because by doing so, we can recognize our unity and by so doing unit with all the starving children he mentions and embrace and care for them and stop this horrible tension and race toward annihilation. Hughes’ book needs to be read by all. We need to be reminded and supported by his words and by the love that abounds within us and around us. Beautifully written. Reaches down into our souls. Definitely 5 out of 5 stars.
