ARA Review by hb310691 of In It Together

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All, a non-fictional book by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes, readers are confronted with issues about love and spirituality. The author begins by claiming that there is a “force of unbelievable love and goodness deep within you” and that his force is like a light “trying to work its way out of you.” The first chapters speak to issues such as poverty, world hunger, gender and racial inequalities However, the main issue, according to the author, is the “struggle with the incessant suffering of common unavoidable discomfort and our human insatiability, the feeling that the grass could always be greener, or is always greener, on the other side.” He calls this the “human condition.”

Hughes explains that the way to cooperation and subsequently a better life depends on four foundational pillars: love, equality, freedom, and peace. By exploring these four principles in a unique way, he acknowledges that we are victims of the social and political structures of the day, but we can survive by embracing truth.

Although the book does not attempt an exploration of spirituality with a religious point of view, it does help readers identify their true selves. He explains: “You do not have a spirit. You are a spirit. You have a body.” Moreover, little emphasis is placed on the color of your skin, your physical characteristics, you occupation, your education, or your financial status. Rather we must turn within ourselves and if we are unhappy, we must have lost touch with our inner beings. Hughes admits, however, that the path to find our way to truth and honesty may be a painful one.

The writing is clear and the prose is unpretentious. It is certainly an easy read. I felt that In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All deserves 4 out of 5 stars. I would recommend it to those looking for a thought-provoking book that helps chart a path towards inner happiness and peace.
