ARA Review by yachtsee of Adrift

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

ADRIFT
This is an adventure story of survival. Once you start reading this book it’ll keep you on the edge of your seat. While I’m an ex-boater with lots of experience on vessels I think anyone with an interest in adventure, boater or not, would enjoy this book.

It begins with a fire on a container ship named the Seattle Express. While in the Northern Pacific the crew is forced to abandon ship when it rolls over in the rough December seas. The Coast Guard can’t assist because of the weather. The crew divides up into two lifeboats and that’s when the adventures begin.

As soon as the lifeboats hit the water, communication between the two teams is cut off. Stories are told from multiple points of view and interwoven into a compelling story of determination and endurance. The events are so well-described, I almost felt the heat from the fire and smoke, and later the wind and the rain.

Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away, a couple (Louise and Larry) who own a small sea towing outfit learn about the tragedy and set out for the burning ship in hopes of being the first to the scene. If they win the towing contract, it’ll help keep their business afloat, but they need to get there first, before the bigger tugboat, owned by the Seattle Express’ company, beats them there.

One lifeboat crew lands on the shores of what they think is an unhabituated island. They suffer from injuries and hunger but with spiritual help they are finally rescued.

You’ll find everything in this book— love, lust, betrayal and also bonds that are impossible to break. At times, it was horrendous with realism. Always intense and suspenseful.

This is the second book in the series but although there were references to the first, it still worked.I liked that the story featured a strong female character and Native American tribal elements. On the surface there were many little scenarios that seemed unrelated, but the author did a wonderful job of weaving them together.

I couldn't put the book down, even for a snack, so I’m giving this book 5 out of 5 stars.
