ARA Review by davidmwpowers of Never 2 Return

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

A capivating crime thriller the heist vein, with brilliant twists

Never 2 Return is sold heist story that will appeal to fans of Ocean’s 11, Mission Impossible, and James Bond, but with a more amateur-pulled-into-it plot and feel.

Max works for a security firm, his uncle's company, as Y2K approaches — which necessitates some upgrades. The development of their latest product has stalled, the company is on the skids, partners have battled it out in the Coutts, and then the uncle dies, leaving Max not a fortune but a couple of jobs: the first is a real job, a promotion with a great salary package — if only the company could afford it; the second is a bank job, and the chance to recover something from the unscrupulous partner who brought the firm to its knees.

The title, Never 2 Return, relates to an important clue concerning this second job.

The story opens in Hong Kong, James Bond style, in the middle of an exciting scene for our hero — or antihero. Well uncomfortable and scary anyway, but he sees a way to turn things around on his captors.

But that is just the Prologue, which is incidental to the main story, but Max will have to turn around a few more sticky situations as he takes on his new jobs, and new partners and collaborators, moving from HK to UK to NY NY USA.

It is not a hands-gripping-the-seat kind of ride, but the pace is steady and consistent, with well-drawn characters including some pesky reporters and romantic interests, the requisite underworld figures and of course some clashes with the police.

Presentation is generally good, with one noticeable issue being missing indentation for many paragraphs.

There is some bad language, as well as lowish level sex scenes/discussion. So recommended for adults, but parental guidance might be needed for those a little younger whom it might otherwise suit.

Overall, I enjoyed it, and have awarded 4 out of 5 stars.
