ARA Review by davidmwpowers of Snuggle Bedtime Stories
This seems to be a very poor scan to ebook of a physical children's book (ebook image seems to be a photo of a large format physical book, Snuggle Bedtime Stories, on an unfolded pillow slip). Only the ebook is available on Amazon (USD$23.28; AUD$34.05; GBP£18.54). The Amazon description finishes with the statement: "Activities at the end of each chapter to reinforce learning."
The first half of the ebook consists of pictures of flowers, repeated in various sizes, cropped/overlapped, with misformatted information about illustrator and missing information about the author and publisher when we get to what seems to be the title page.
The ebook has no electronic table of contents, but in the scan we now get to partial names of the the three stories/poems, the first of which (Garden in your Heart) goes from p338 to p480 where we have a meet your friends section that has pictures naming characters and flowers. The second poem (1-2-3 Breathe) goes from p531 to p560, while the third (Windmills & Daffodills) goes from p561 to p585.
The second half of the ebook is readable and includes full page images and readable text, but still with some unfortunate formatting/scanning errors. p587 is the copyright page. The content is pretty good, and searching for the book (https://www.thesnugglebedtimestories.com/) and publisher (https://www.seasaltbooks.com/) websites reveals the seriousness of the author/publisher in using the book and working with teachers/schools in helping children in times of stress. The promised end of chapter activities are very simple and straightforward and follow naturally rather than being signposted as such.
Overall, the underlying physical book seems to be well written with clever age-appropriate rhymes and appropriate suggestions to help children calm down and sleep. The suggested age is Baby to 10, but I would think it is most applicable around the Kindergarten/Infants age group (4 to 7).
Unfortunately, while the underlying physical book would probably earn 4 or 5 stars (and if I had a chance to see it, I'd probably recommend it to parents), the ebook is a total mess and so I can award only 1 out of 5 stars as it is scarcely readable and you have to skip through to the middle of the ebook (p338 of 587pp) to start the first story. I do not recommend buying this as an ebook from Amazon, although the print book seems likely to be good.
There is not actually that much text, and the ebook needs to have the early images culled and the text carefully typeset. It may be that the author/publisher needs to produce their own epub version rather than hoping that Amazon can make one from a MSW or PDF version — and certainly they need to test the preview Amazon offers.
