ARA Review by Mustapha Musa 2 of The Chest of Visions
The Chest of Visions by Tim Ferguson is a brilliantlywritten piece of sci-fi. The writer has used a very simple way to tell thereaders about the preaching of God. The main character of the book is Mattpaulwho lives in Caperston, a parallel universe just like ours. Caperston is asmall planet and it revolves around a different star. The story has been saidin the form of conversations between Mattpaul and two other boys from Earth.
The story starts when Tim from Earth receives a text in hiswebsite from Mattpaul. Tim is fascinated by the contents of the text and heasks Mattpaul to tell him more about his planet and the people there. Mattpaultells him about Chihaysu, who is preaching the word of God to the people ofCaperston. The people are fascinated by the things Chihaysu tells them and thepower of prayers. Matt also tells him that prior to the arrival of Chihaysu, the people of Caperston was unaware of the existence of God. Matt becomes afollower of Chihaysu and goes around preaching the word of God.
Matt tells Tim that in his country there are two types ofpeople namely, the valley people and the mountain people. He says that thevalley people are rich unlike the mountain people and they avoid interactingwith the mountain people. This tells us that the people of Caperston are a lotlike us. They, just like us, discriminate people on the basis of theirfinancial status. In between Mattpaul also has conversation with another guyfrom Earth named Alex who has lost his best friend and is finding it difficultto have faith on God. Matt helps him in this situation and regains his faith onGod.
The writer has done abrilliant job. The characters blend in perfectly. The concept of duo-universeconversation adds to the excitement of the book. The contexts are easy tounderstand and the readers can relate to the various situation quite easily. Myfavorite part of the book is when Matt helps Alex to overcome from the death ofhis best friend. It shows how people from different universe can connect andhelp each other. The pictures in the book are nicely used and well placed. There were no grammatical errors and it seems like the book is professionallyedited.
The writer's description of the ambience of Caperston isvivid and you can't help but imagine the environment there. For a while it feltlike the writer is talking about a real planet. This book will be verybeneficial to young readers as they can understand the preaching of God in avery simple language. The teachings of Chihaysu is similar to that of Jesus. Itshows that every God teaches us the same thing. This book is a must read forevery child irrespective of religion. The various quotes from the Bible helpsyou to understand the writing even better.
The book has my rate of 4 out of 5
