ARA Review by YukiNotAvailable of Fish Wielder

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Fish Wielder by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison is a hilarious and action-packed fantasy satire that parodies classic tropes of the genre while delivering an engaging adventure. The story follows Thoral Mighty Fist, a brooding barbarian hero, and his sarcastic, talking fish companion, Brad. Together, they embark on a bizarre and dangerous quest to retrieve the legendary Pudding of Power and stop the evil Heartless One from conquering their world, Grome. This book is filled with absurdity, wit, and a deep appreciation for the fantasy genre. I would rate this book 4 out of 5 for its clever humor and inventive storytelling.

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its comedic style. Hardison expertly blends over-the-top action with witty dialogue, poking fun at familiar fantasy conventions. The writing is playful and full of unexpected twists, making it a delight for fans of humorous fantasy. The book pays homage to legendary authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and Robert E. Howard while offering a unique, laugh-out-loud experience.

The characters are another highlight of the novel. Thoral is not your typical fearless barbarian—he is haunted by a tragic past, which adds depth to his character amidst the chaos. Brad, the talking koi fish, is a fantastic sidekick who delivers some of the book’s funniest moments. Their dynamic is reminiscent of classic comedic duos, making their interactions enjoyable and memorable.

While the book is undeniably entertaining, some readers might find the relentless parody and absurdity overwhelming. The plot occasionally takes a backseat to the humor, which may not appeal to those looking for a more structured fantasy adventure. However, for readers who enjoy whimsical and unconventional storytelling, Fish Wielder is a refreshing and highly enjoyable read.

In conclusion, Fish Wielder is a fantastic parody that blends epic fantasy with humor in a way that few books manage to achieve. It is a must-read for fans of Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams, as well as anyone who loves a good laugh with their adventure. 4 out of 5.
