ARA Review by bstanzell of The Chest of Visions

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

The Chest Of Visions: Secrets Of Caperston by Tim Ferguson is a book that finds a unique take on what the coming of Jesus Christ could look like. It is the first book in a series. It combines the familiar biblical view, the cosmological views and the Big Bang to tell about a parallel universe known as Caperston and it's relationship to Earth. It is written as a web correspondence between people on earth and people in Caperston.

Familiar stories from the Bible such as, Jesus walking on water, the good Samaritan and the Feast of five fishes, were retold but with a new twist and in a different universe. It’s not hard to believe the author was trying to make the reader think about what the coming of Jesus would be like if he came in today’s era.

As a Christian author myself who also uses biblical themes in fantasy, I was intrigued to read such a story. I really think this story could be wonderful for a church youth group to study. In fact, I intend to show it to my church elders for that exact purpose. The story seems to most relate to teens, but that should not be taken as a bad thing. It’s a wonderful piece of literature for teens to ponder with their own struggles with the church versus the world.

This book did take a new view on biblical stories, and while I appreciated it, the storyline was hard to relate back to the bible at times. This is especially why I think this book is best read in a bible study type group in order to fully understand the twists on familiar themes. I couldn’t say this really is a horrible thing though, as studying the Bible in groups is a great thing.

There were few errors and the plot was fascinating. I give this book 5/5 stars for its potential to really teach kids. I’m unsure if I will read the rest of the series myself, but I will be suggesting it for the youth group at our church.
