ARA Review by Meversgerd of The Girl Who Cheated Death

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

The Girl Who Cheated Death [] is quite literally a death-defying story about Alexandra Drummond, a high school girl who manages to thwart the angel of Death, Azrael's summoning after her whole family is mortally injured in a car accident. While she's dying, she watches while a man wearing a pinstriped suit with dark oily hair takes her family's souls, one by one. When it comes time to take Alexandra's soul, to his surprise, she rejects his calling. During Alex's long, painful journey back to wellness, an angry Azrael invades her dreams, scaring her and causing her to doubt her own sanity. As the guilt from the accident that she believes she caused gnaws on her conscious, Alexandra tries to live a healthy life. But when Death appears to her during the day, while she is very much awake, a motive for Azrael's return emerges. She fears he has come for her soul.

As Alexandra navigates back to a somewhat healthy life after the Death of her parents and little sister, Azrael continues to show up in her woke hours to threaten her life. But why? Wasn't it enough that she was alone in the world? That she'd never see or hear her little sister's lisp again? What does the angel of Death want from her? Most importantly, why does he threaten to kill her and not just do it when he's proven that he absolutely can. That epiphany stops Alex from fearing Azrael and starts her wondering why he won't leave her alone.

Alex decides to put aside the idea of school, work, and the return to normalcy to solve the mystery of Azrael's interference in her already unhinged life. With her best friends, Carl and Kate, Alexandra comes up with a theory that has them scared for her life. What if Azrael is not there for her, but to stop her from saving her family? How is that even possible? After a series of extraordinary events that turn theory into fact, Alex, armed with undeniable proof that she could bring her family back, must convince her friends to save her family. But is her version of evidence enough for Carl and Kate when Alex is ready to put her own life at risk?

Alan Bakers' novel, The Girl Who Cheated Death[i/] Pulls you in from page one and keeps you mesmerized until the end. Just when the readers think they know what will happen, the story takes a significant turn that leaves you guessing until the end. The story blends the perfect portions of paranormal, mystery, and suspense into a suspenseful thriller. Thumbs up!

I give this book a 5 out of 5 This novel is beautifully written. The author's voice and style add intrigue through the first-person account from the narrator, Alexandra herself. Her personal introspection allows the reader to know only her thoughts from her unusual experiences while watching and gauging the sometimes turbulent, other times supportive reactions of the characters around her.
