ARA Review by Lisajayauthor of McDowell

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

McDowell by William H. Coles
McDowell is the story of a prominent surgeon rises to the top of his field. The main character, McDowell is an interesting and sad man at the same time. He is obsessed with climbing mountains in Nepal and opens a clinic there to bring much needed medical services. However, as a human being is filled with entitlement and selfishness.

The author does an amazing job bringing this character to life and giving him context. At times it can be hard to read because the author does that good of a job making sure the personality of McDowell is rude, egotistical, and narcissistic.

Also, throughout the book, we get to see different characters lives that are important to McDowell such as his kids. The author does a good job of weaving together these smaller chapters into having a meaning in McDowell’s life.

If you are able to read and look past the ego on McDowell, you will see a wonderful story of how one man was selfish and egotistical enough to step on anyone he needed to climb a mountain or the steps in his field to reach the very top. Once there he has to defend his title and the unethical roads, he has taken in the past start to unravel.

Will he be able to keep his position in the field? Will he be able to balance a sometimes rocky personal life with his family with defending his position?

Author William H. Coles brilliantly writes a main character very different than what you would expect and weaves a story that really captures you and keeps your attention even though you don’t want to keep reading about the things the main character says and does and it is for this reason I give this book a 5 out of 5.
