ARA Review by Arma06 of The Reel Sisters

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Reel sisters is a story of friendship between five women Rose, Sophie, Veronica, Amanda and Melinda who comes into the picture much later when she is rescued by the other four from drowning in the river. It’s about friends sharing and developing a common interest of fly fishing. It’s aptly mentioned that fly fishing is a drug and the first time you get a good tug on your line and you land your first fish, there is nothing quite like it and so the addiction begins.

The characters in the book are dealing with various issues. Rose is dealing with the pain of losing her child in an accident, Sophie is trying to recover from a heartbreak, Veronica is a high flyer corporate lady who has decided to give up motherhood and Amanda is a mother of two with her husband deployed in Afghanistan. Melinda is a photographer who wants to avoid all questions relating to her parenthood at all costs. The issues raised are real.

Every character in the story has dedicated short chapters wherein their state of being and state of mind is individually described and elaborated. These chapters on the different characters unfold a distinct state of mind and some kind of a subsisting fear, anxiety, issue or perplexity each of them are going through. Hence, in the background of all technical aspects of fly fishing is described the state of mind and life in general of all characters.

Rose’s cabin at Colorado where all the friends get together for fly fishing is much more than just a fly fishing adventure spot but a place where they sit for long hours and share stories and talk about life in general besides talking about who caught what and how many fishes. In other words, it is a refuge/escape from the difficult conundrums of their lives. Basically a place where they would temporarily get their bearings and then get back to life again with more strength and hope.

For those who are actually into fly fishing it would be a very interesting book to read as various technicalities including the types of flies, the hook size, the casting line et cetera are discussed. The scenic description is exceptional.

In the end, the importance of friendship is emphasized as it helps in processing grief and loss in life to a great extent. Nevertheless, the process of dealing with grief goes on for the entire life and everybody deals with it at their own pace.

Highly recommend this book especially to female readers.
