ARA Review by yachtsee of Cynthia and Dan

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Cynthia and Dan: Cyber War

This was my second time reading a book authored by Dorothy May Mercer, and though this book is 10th in the McBride series, it can be read as a stand-alone.

The main character, Cynthia Patterson, is the head of an all-female team of security operatives who protect Senator Mike McBride. And aside from her security responsibilities, she also works undercover and poses as a receptionist while leading a team to fight cyberwars. Much of the book is based on preventing a cyber attack planned by middle eastern terrorists.

The personal side of Cynthia finds herself in a love triangle. She’s been in a long time relationship with policeman Dan, but gets involved with a mysterious man named Sky, and he becomes a much bigger part of her life.

Readers should be aware that the story involves discussion of terminating pregnancies. And at the back of the book, there’s a reference guide for the various methods to terminate pregnancy. In light of today’s political climate regarding the right to choose, I”m surprised this book hasn’t been banned by the far right. There’s been a great deal of controversy in the past year regarding this topic, and regardless of where you stand on the subject, this story addresses those difficult life decisions. For that reason alone, I don’t feel it’s an appropriate book for the young reader. However, the pregnancy is only a very tiny portion of the story.

The ending is a surprise, but the real surprise for readers is that the book doesn’t end at the end of the story. After the story, the author includes “Author’s Notes: Endings and Loose Ends” where some of the unresolved situations in the story are dealt with.

This book was a light read (other than all the references in the back) and easy to follow but never predictable. I’m beginning to like this author’s writing and will read more books in her series.

I gave this book 4 stars out of 5 because of the punctuation errors. I felt the book could’ve used a little more editing. The cover design looks like something from the '60s, but since it’s an ebook I didn't deduct for it. I recommend this book to readers of light romance and light suspense.
