ARA Review by jcollins816 of In It Together

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

The premise of In It Together by Eckhardt Aurelius Hughes was one that intrigued and attracted me - all being united in something together seems to be sadly missing from today's world. And, initially, some of the concepts lived up to my hopes. For example, the ideas of there being a "real you" separate from the external trappings and roles that we take on throughout our lives, or that true consciousness is necessary for love.

However, I am providing a review score of 2 out of 5 because the further I got into the book, the more the writing style and presentation became an obstacle for me to comprehend what the author wished to transmit. The writing is wordy, with unnecessarily long sentences, making it difficult to follow the premises he offers. An example or two is helpful for understanding complex ideas, but the examples became redundant, and therefore, tiresome. He also provided so many definitions of what a particular term did or did not mean in this book, that I often felt I needed a note pad next to me to scratch out equations of what is equivalent to what - for purposes of this book. The repeated references to what will be presented in the book was also very distracting from the actual presentation.

I also found contradictions in the sections about how we treat our selves, and therefore, others. Maybe some contradiction is inherent, but when the author presented an opinion in one paragraph and contradicted it in the next, he lost me.

The things I enjoyed were the quotes from renowned philosophers and orators, as well as the author's interjections of humor. Both of these features served as welcome breaks from the otherwise verbose presentation.
