ARA Review by Ckmccurry12 of In It Together

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

In It Together by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes is both a philosophical treatise on the reality of how one lives in society and also a how-to to guide to live one's life most successfully in order to reach self-actualization and also get along with all members of society. He states that all individuals have false yous and one real you, that individuals are tasked in this life to act from their real yous in order to find creative outlets, inner peace and self-discipline when making adult choices in order to experience true freedom as individual adults.

According to the author in the second half of the book, it is only when we understand that everyone is trying to self-actualize that we are able to love everyone, get along together, and experience a sort of perfect society. This society will be the result of real yous letting go of negative opinions about each other.

Hughes ends In It Together with loving words to his reader which seem to seek to inspire and motivate them to take up his prescription for living their lives successfully and also seek to get along with everyone they encounter in a positive way, thus creating the great society that we can achieve together when all of us stop making negative assumptions about each other and instead commune together as real yous.

Overall, In It Together{/i] earns a 2 out of 5 rating. There are many wordy descriptions and definitions, bulky sentence structure, many repetitions, a tone that can sometimes be preachy or negative, and advice given that even the author states may be unwanted or unsolicited. The author is sometimes crass, or tries frequently to use humor, in a way that is not successful.

There are frequent references to the obese, to alcoholics and to others who struggle that are clearly disparaging. It is clear that the author only values people he sees as trying to self-actualize. Although the ideas for self-actualization offered by the author have their merit, his frequent interjection of his own opinions takes away from his overall argument. The ideas in this book are detracted from by its word choice and sentence structure. The book could easily be condensed and still make the same points well. The overall feeling of the book is that of a rant.
