ARA Review by Theemi of Gardening With Guns

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

"Gardening with Guns: A Memoir" by AJ Wootton is a stunning portrayal of growing up in the rural Pacific Northwest, marked by the struggles of a Vietnam War veteran father grappling with alcoholism and PTSD. Wootton's memoir is an unflinching examination of her family's past and present, and the challenges she faced as a young girl in this tough environment. Her prose is vivid and poetic, imbued with a deep sense of meaning and authenticity that captures the rugged landscape and complex human relationships in rural America.

The memoir's structure is a series of interconnected essays, each one with its own distinct narrative arc. While each essay is powerful in its own right, the lack of a clear narrative thread can make it challenging for the reader to follow the author's overall trajectory. Nonetheless, the essays are well-crafted and immersive, showcasing Wootton's talent as a writer and her deep insight into the human experience.

Wootton's memoir is a remarkable examination of the complexities of family relationships and the power of forgiveness and redemption. Her portrayal of her father is nuanced and compassionate, highlighting the struggles of a war veteran coming to grips with his demons. Wootton's memoir is also a celebration of the beauty and resilience of nature, which she uses to heal and transform herself in the face of adversity.

At times, the memoir can feel disjointed, particularly in the essays that focus on the author's romantic relationships. These essays can be underdeveloped and feel like they are at odds with the overall narrative. Nonetheless, "Gardening with Guns" is a beautifully crafted memoir that offers an insightful and powerful perspective on rural life in America. Wootton's courage and vulnerability in sharing her story make this book a must-read for anyone interested in the complexities of family relationships, the challenges of growing up, and the enduring power of love and connection.

Overall, "Gardening with Guns" is a moving and impactful memoir that showcases AJ Wootton's talent as a writer and her deep understanding of the human experience. Her story is both unique and universal, a testament to the power of resilience and redemption in the face of adversity.

As a rating I would give this book a Five out of Five star rating
