ARA Review by JulieMehrotra of Shadow's Voice

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

A fun and engaging book. It is a beautifully written fantasy novel that has a great plot and is well crafted.

In the novel, Rose is the main character. Her strong and bold character is complemented by her knowledge of shadow magic. She could see and search through the shadows and used this power to keep herself safe. Since she lived in a country where magical people are feared and distrusted, her ability to walk among shadows and disappear into darkness was also a liability.

She was a good person. She could have killed both the tracers initially - Fabian and Simone - but she decided to do it right and let them live. She eventually killed them in self-defense though.

She has a flawed past and is torn between seeking redemption and serving the welfare of her people. Her chance encounter with a dying man changes her world forever. The man, an officer named Nico, reveals that there is a plot to assassinate the king, and he requests Rose to bring this information to the royal castle. Despite her apprehension, Rose does so and soon finds herself immersed in the world of royalty and nobility, many of whom also possess magical gifts of their own.

It was apparent when Rose met the king when she delivered the message that Nico had given to her that she was a courageous and strong woman and that even King acknowledged it when she met him.

The conclusion is open-ended enough to suggest at least one sequel; let's hope Johanson delivers.

All in all, Shadow's Voice is excellent and a 5 star read. I highly recommend this novel to fantasy fans. :)

I rate the book 5 out of 5
