ARA Review by Mike Raymond of The Deserving

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Review of The Deserving by Efren O'Brien

The author presents a detailed account of American Civil War action in the Texas and New Mexico territories. Interwoven in the historical facts, he has added the personal activities of several fictitious people, from both sides of the fray.

The story would be of particular interest to those living in the locations mentioned in the story. The author names places and describes the terrain very well. The harsh environment and the resilience required by the people living there is well illustrated in the story.

Many people do not know the involvement in the Civil War out West. This story brings that knowledge to our attention and shows the wide extent of the fighting that took place.

On a scale of 1 to 5 this book has earned a 4, in my evaluation. I did not rate it as a 3 because of the historical details that are many, showing that the author did the necessary research. The book was not rated as a 5 due to the occasional extra long paragraphs that I found unnecessary. Rating is 4 out of 5
