A unique blend of genres, Mike Carlozzi blends corporate intrigue on an interstellar scope with a battle between magic wielders and western/secret agents on a penal planet. The main characters are flawed, yet strong in their own right with agendas that are firmly rooted in the reality of their situation. A corporate mogul who wants to retain power, a powerful mage who desires control of the penal planet, secret agents bent on usurping power from their company, while eliminating the threat of the mystics, and an everyday man who finds himself caught in the center of it all. For the most part, I could sympathize with most of them with a few exceptions.

The ending did feel rushed. There were some nice twists and surprises along the way. The author did a good job of world building and creating intriguing planets, though none I would care to visit, including the future Earth. I am looking forward to seeing how the story continues and where it will take us.

In all it was an enjoyable read, and I felt really connected to Jayden, the everyday man, and the situations he finds himself in. I would highly recommend this book, not only to science fiction fans, but for fantasy lovers as well, since it offers a nice blend of both.

I give this book a 4 out of 5.
