ARA Review by soumi+ of Herai

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Herai by Aaron D. Key

Herai by Aaron D. Key is a captivating debut novel that offers a unique and intriguing narrative structure, creating a sense of mystery within its pages. The story takes us on a journey through two alternative realities, both shaped by an enigmatic all-powerful being. One of these realities introduces us to an acquaintance of this being whose motivations are deeply rooted in love, and his presence significantly influences the unfolding events.

The central character is a beautifully portrayed figure who has just reached adulthood in an underground stone city, shrouded in torchlit tunnels and guarded by a sense of isolation from the outside world. This isolated existence is threatened by perceived savages beyond the city walls. In one version of the story, the character is tasked with venturing outside, braving all its dangers, in an attempt to save the city from an impending war. In the other version, the protagonist experiences a brutal attack, plunging the reader into a gripping whodunit narrative filled with suspicion and secrets that endanger the city's very fabric of life.

The author's narrative choice to alternate between these two realities keeps readers engaged as they explore the consequences of the Old One's presence in one version and absence in the other. The character development is rich and the descriptions are lush, immersing readers in a world filled with intriguing mysteries. The initial pacing of the book might seem slow, but this deliberate approach allows for a satisfying unraveling of the intricate plot and gradual revelation of the differences between the two timelines.

Herai is a thought-provoking read that keeps you guessing, and its unique storytelling format is sure to delight fans of mind games and twists. The parallel timelines offer distinct and enthralling experiences, with one focused on solving a mystery and the other on deception and war.

As a reader, I'm eagerly looking forward to the next installment in the Wheel of Eight series, as Herai is a promising start to what appears to be a series filled with potential. If you enjoy intricate storytelling, character-driven plots, and a touch of mystery and romance, I highly recommend giving this book a chance, and I encourage you to stick with it, as the payoff is truly worth it. I would rate it five out of five as this is a novel that will leave you pondering the intricacies of its story long after you've turned the final page.
