ARA Review by Kate Nixon of Mike and the Locked Santa

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Mike and the Locked Santa

2 out of 5 stars

This story is about Mike, who finds Santa injured in his living room. Santa needs help from Mike and his sister, Abigail, to stop a rebellion. The Chafias (rebellion group) believe Chumans (the name elves call humans) have enslaved the elves and they want to break free.

Mike and Abigail fly to the North Pole with Santa to help defeat the Chafias. Mike and Abigail meet Mrs Claus, learn North Polean Chung Fu, and learn about the Major Generator that turns Christmas Spirit into Magic. Without Christmas Spirit the North Poleans can’t survive, something the Chafias don’t understand. Mike and Abigail have to help Santa to keep the Christmas spirit and the Major Generator working and keep the North Poleans alive.

I’ve given this book 2 out of 5, the story line is lovely and sends the message that Christmas is about peace and love and that Christmas spirit is inside all of us. The story also touches on the loss of a loved one and how that can affect how we feel and approach occasions like Christmas.

The writing, however, lets the story down. Throughout the book there are lots of spelling mistakes and the grammar jumps from past tense to present tense at times.

The story does not always flow and jumps from one scene to the next without any explanation e.g. in Chapter 2 Mrs Claus returns from the kitchen but there is no mention of her being there in person to begin with.

Throughout the book there are some unusual choices of words that don’t fit with the writing of the book. Some words used don’t have the right meaning for the context they are being used e.g. ‘…Chafias tortured him and he did not acquiesce.’, ‘…his father’s golf club that was kneeling in a corner…’

I don’t know if this book was edited before being published but I believe with more editing this could be a great book.
