ARA Review by Lauren Daugherty of The Girl Who Cheated Death

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Alan Baker's "A Girl Who Cheated Death" proved to be a compelling supernatural thriller that kept my attention from start to finish. I give it a 5 out of 5! In a genre often filled with predictable tropes, Baker delivers something refreshingly different. His talent shines in how he seamlessly merges our everyday world with supernatural elements, making even the most extraordinary events feel grounded and believable.

What particularly impressed me was the careful attention to detail in the storytelling. Baker never rushes crucial moments or skimps on important character development. Each scene unfolds with just the right amount of description, enough to paint a vivid picture without bogging down the narrative. The supernatural aspects are introduced gradually, building tension while maintaining credibility within the story's framework.
The characters stood out to me. Instead of falling into familiar genre stereotypes, each person feels genuine and well-rounded, with their own distinct motivations and flaws.

The protagonist's journey especially resonated with me, as her reactions to the increasingly strange events felt authentic and relatable. Even the supporting characters have depth, making their interactions meaningful to the overall story.

The pace of the book was good as well. It moves quickly enough to keep you engaged but allows enough breathing room to properly develop the plot and characters. Baker shows particular skill in building suspense, knowing exactly when to reveal key information and when to hold back for maximum impact.

For readers who appreciate supernatural fiction that prioritizes strong character development and thoughtful plotting alongside its mysterious elements, this book is definitely worth your time. It's one of those rare finds that actually lives up to its premise, delivering a satisfying story that stays with you after you've finished the last page. I'm already looking forward to reading it again.
