ARA Review by aysha zulfiqar of In It Together

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Eckhart Aurelius Hughes has rendered a book In It Together, which is a sobering reflection on diverse human experiences with a view of encouraging people into oneness in the diverse world. The main aim of the book that sharing of suffering brings people together is quite relevant in today’s world. Hughes’ prose is often poetic in nature, full of gratefulness to the issues of weakness, bouncing back and waiting for better times. He places some personal observations sideways philosophical ones, which are collated into this beautiful section that is both personal and global.

Nevertheless, even though the central idea of the book is essential, the way it has been dealt with is not consistent throughout. While some chapters are very rich in content, quite a few others are too light on the subject and hence are rather redundant. At times Hughes gets too lofty for his own good and one is left with the feeling that some more practical oriented insights were expected. Furthermore, the sequence of ideas is rather loose making it difficult to be fully engaged in parts of the book.

In It Together is centered on such readers who, when looking for a book, do not expect a clear course of action, but are rather looking for the understanding of emotions. Still, for the readers who would want a clear and systematic way of coping with the troubles of existence that are presented in the book, the philosophy will be an anticlimaxes.

To repeat our point of view at the beginning, Hughes convinces readers of their collective humanity, though this perturbed unity is at times unsteadily essayed. It is the kind of book, In It Together, that one does not recommend all at once; it is to be read in bits allowing the few beautiful patches to be appreciated.3.5/5 stars.
