ARA Review by Stephanie Kjaerbaek of In It Together

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

My rating of this book is three out of 5. I felt the book was positive with a good message, but not relevant to all appreciators of self-help books. This book claims a universal message, and is useful as a resource for some people.

I strive to present a well-rounded evaluation of the book. Its merits lie in its overarching positive message, the promotion of introspection, and the theme of resilience. The central idea of collective struggle and the unifying nature of adversity conveys a significant and relevant message, particularly in today's increasingly divided society. This focus is indeed praiseworthy. By exploring how individuals navigate challenges, the book provides readers with essential insights into cultivating resilience and discovering inner strength. Additionally, its emphasis on self-reflection and the human experience prompts readers to engage in personal examination.

However, the book does exhibit certain shortcomings, such as a familiar narrative, oversimplified solutions, and a narrow range of the author's viewpoints. The notion of shared human struggle and the significance of empathy is not particularly innovative. The book's originality and its unique contribution to this subject matter are somewhat constrained. It tends to overlook complex social and political issues, which may result in a failure to address the intricacies of human experience and the systemic roots of suffering.

The author's viewpoints and interpretations may not resonate with all readers, potentially limiting the book's broader appeal. "In It Together" serves as a meaningful resource for those in search of inspiration and a deeper comprehension of the human condition. Nevertheless, its effectiveness may vary depending on the reader's prior knowledge.

"In It Together" provides a poignant exploration of the collective human experience of struggle. Hughes skillfully intertwines personal stories, philosophical reflections, and universal truths to demonstrate how our challenges, regardless of their magnitude, bind us together. The book encourages readers to cultivate empathy, draw strength from shared hardships, and uncover a more profound sense of purpose and connection. While at times dense, the uplifting message prevails. It stands out as an impressive work in certain aspects, yet it remains limited in scope in others.
