ARA Review by Husna Mia 1 of Cadillac Hubie

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Cadillac Hubie

Wow, Cadillac Hubie was quite the adventure! This book tossed me right into a whirlwind of crime, excitement, and a sprinkle of the supernatural, all set against the gritty, sun-baked landscape of Baja, Mexico. The story kicks off when Hubie’s cherished ‘59 Cadillac gets snatched by the Diaz drug cartel. At first, I thought it would be a simple revenge tale, but boy, was I wrong, things took a much deeper turn. It turns out there’s an ancient relic at play, and suddenly, this isn’t just about a stolen car anymore. Hubie, along with his tough-as-nails friend Bear and the enigmatic Gomez Gomez, finds himself up against not just cartel goons but something far more formidable.

One of the things I really appreciated about this book was how it blended gritty realism with elements of mythology. The action scenes were pulse-pounding, and the author’s vivid descriptions of the desert landscapes made me feel like I was right there, sweating under the blazing sun. The dialogue was sharp and felt natural, which kept the conversations lively. But honestly, the standout character for me was Gomez Gomez. He had such depth and cultural richness that made him far more intriguing than I anticipated. I found myself wanting to dive deeper into his background and beliefs.

That said, the pacing wasn’t always spot on. There were moments when I was flipping pages like crazy, but then it would slow down with lengthy explanations that pulled me out of the action. And considering the book is titled Cadillac Hubie, I expected Hubie to be the clear protagonist, but at times, it felt like Gomez Gomez was stealing the show. Don’t get me wrong, I really liked his character, but it made it a bit challenging to fully connect with Hubie.

I’m giving Cadillac Hubie a solid 4 out of 5 because it was a unique, gripping read with a fantastic mix of crime and mysticism, but it wasn’t without its flaws. The pacing could have been smoother, and I would have liked a stronger focus on Hubie. Still, the story kept me engaged, the world-building was immersive, and the characters felt real and multi-dimensional. Overall, I’d definitely recommend Cadillac Hubie!
