ARA Review by sheryl hearts of Soul of a Warrior

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Soul of a Warrior blends paranormal romance with science fiction adventure and opens the Immortal Warriors series with energy and emotion. The story follows Kimi, an ordinary woman pulled from her everyday life into a dangerous world of alien shapeshifters and interplanetary conflict. The stakes feel real from the beginning, so even the quieter scenes carry tension.

Kimi is easy to root for because she reacts like a real person who never asked to be part of cosmic politics. She is frightened, angry, curious, and stubborn enough to hold on to her own sense of self. Watching her push back and adapt gives the book its emotional center.

Neyvarre, the alien love interest, is intense and authoritative in a way that some readers may find controlling early on. If you are sensitive to power imbalances in romance, the beginning may be uncomfortable. Over time the relationship softens as trust grows, and their pull toward each other becomes more satisfying once mutual respect starts to show.

World building is one of the book’s signatures. Denna Holm gives her alien culture history, social structure, conflict, and environment. At its best this makes the setting feel large and lived in. At its most detailed it can slow momentum, especially if you prefer action over description.

There is more here than a mating story. Themes of survival, loyalty, consent, and the right to choose your own future run through the plot. Side characters add texture and hint at future storylines that could expand the universe in interesting ways.

Overall, this is a strong series opener with rough edges. Some readers will bounce off the heavy description or the early control issues in the central romance. Others will enjoy the high stakes, emotional heat, and sense of a much larger world waiting to be explored.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
