It's difficult for a Captain to abandon the ship. I think that Steve made the right decision because he
cared about the lives of the crew on the ship, and he made the effort to try to save the freighter.
It's understandable that he would want to return home and be a father to his son.

I thought there were several plot segments in the book where the character Steve continued to
wonder whether he had made the right decision to abandon the freighter.

This is a toughi! Indeed it must have been difficult. Most people would want to leave a job with a clean slate, but rather he took the lives into consideration which is utmost important.

His decision shows that he is a good leader as he valued the life of his crew members more than his job.

I think that he made the right choice to abandon ship, I do not think that they prepared for what to do if the ship crew got separated.

I mean, he was the captain and he was responsible for the lives of his men, so, I think under the circumstances he made the right decision.

I think with the information he had at the time, he believed it was the best decision. Maybe there were some underlying reasons that pushed him in that direction, but considering he had the lives on his entire crew resting on his shoulders, I believe he would have ditched personal factors in favour of the severity of the situation, at least for that moment.

I think Steve made a calculated decision on the basis of the what he observed. The crew couldn't even get to the fire suits because that area had caught fire. Even if they had stayed, there was very little they could have done, so I think he made the right decision to keep the crew safe.
