I have read the The Giver and loved it. Altered Carbon is on my list. Thank you. :)

I would recommend TJ Berry's Space Unicorn Blues and Five Unicorn Flush. They are easy reads, very interesting, and have a lot of action. The writing is great, and I find myself wanting more, even though she only has two books out so far.
