The book versus your favorite passages...

Post by ccundall2130 »

How do you feel the book explains your favorite passages? Does it create more clarity or confusion for you? I've always love Genesis from start to finish. However, I always questioned the timelines and how they worked out. I feel this book has a good idea of how we should equate the timelines in terms we can relate to. I haven't read other books like this that are an interpretation form. I can't compare my experience with this book to other books like it.

I feel the book did a good job of making the Old Testament stories clearer and easier to understand. I think putting them in chronological order helped in the understanding too.

I've read a lot of works by various scholars who try to identify who wrote which portion of the Old Testament and deduce from that the sequence of events. Sometimes they helped and sometimes they just added to the confusion. This book is not so erudite, but it's much easier to understand.

I am hopping around, reading a few select passages before I read the entire book. One of my favorite passages in the Old Testament is the account of Deborah. There are very few stories about strong women in the Bible, and I find her story encouraging. Briefly, Deborah is a judge, or ruler, of Israel. Barak is a military leader and Deborah has instructed him to lead an army to fight their oppressor because God has granted them victory at this time. Barak tells Deborah he will only go if she goes with him. Deborah agrees to go. That is all there is to this conversation in the Bible. The author chooses to add this filler regarding the conversation between Barak and Deborah:
“Barak believed that she would decline to participate in such an adventure, but he was wrong.”
This strikes me as a bit condescending. I have read this passage many times and never had the sense that there was anything but respect for Deborah to lead, as God had chosen her. I have, however, read commentaries that have attempted to discount or dismiss Deborah because she was a woman. This comment is not as obvious, but it still implies a air of perceived weakness in Deborah that I have no reason to think existed.

Exactly. Putting them in a chronological order was helpful

I like Genesis too. The book creates more clarity. No confusion at all.

It reminds me of the movies that take place at one time, then jump back in time, then jump forward. It can be pretty confusing. I'm a fan of chronological order.

Chronology-wise, the author has done a great job. I have read many Christian books but this one is a masterpiece.

I feel the book simplified the passages. Especially the book of Genesis where bible stories are replete.
