Fairy Tales and/or Retellings of Fairy Tales Genre Discussion

Post by Heidi M Simone »

Happy August everyone! As you can tell, this month we will be discussing fairy tales and/or retellings of fairy tales.

Fairy Tale
- "a children's story about magical and imaginary beings and lands."
- "an instance of a folklore genre that takes the form of a short story."

Retelling of a Fairy Tale
- a story that takes a fairy tale and changes plot points, characters, and/or themes, but a reader can still identify the original tale

As we begin this month's discussion, here are some guiding questions:
  • What book/tale did you read?
  • Was the story an original fairy tale or a retelling?
  • If it was a retelling, how close was it compared to the original fairy tale?
  • Were there other genres woven into the text?
  • Rating/Recommendation?
Hope we all have a great month of reading! :lire4:

So, I quickly read The Death of the Little Hen (a recommendation by casdill), and it was an interesting little tale. This one was written by the Grimm brothers, so it's an original fairy tale. It features animals who think and talk, I would say it has fantasy elements. Since it's so short, I would recommend to those who enjoy fairy tales with sad endings.
