As devices that could show who had last touched an object, I think they were a good idea. They were very useful in the story.

I think they were used well, It's call the "Crystilleries" of Echoland and were a callback to the title.

The idea of Crystilleries is unique. They made the reader struggle to find how they are used in the story. These played an important role in taking the story forward. These finally helped Will to explore the new land with their unique quality of revealing who has last touched the device and it helped Will to find his sister.

The idea is okay but the details and explanation are cumbersome.

Kro92813 wrote: 03 Sep 2019, 04:39 The crystilleries were a little confusing to me at the beginning, but once I grasped the concept of what the author was trying to portray, they did drive the story forward. They were invented to hold happy memories, but then became illegal and were all collected and cast into the lake which caused a lot of deaths by people trying to find the treasure (the floating bodies under the lake).

Without the crystilleries Velerian would not have been able to manipulate Frankenstein, Will and Peter would not have figured out how to enter Pellucids restricted section in the library, they wouldnt have figured out how to enter Olam Shone without it, etc.
Thank you for the explanation :)

I love the idea of a crystillery. I would love to have one and revisit my happy memories all the time. We all know that time is not our friend. Some memories are stronger than others and over the days, months, and years even, memories fade. One of the best things about memories is that you don't forget how you felt at that point in time. A modern day crystillery, one could argue, could be the video camera.

Chrystilleries are one part of the essence that constitutes the story. Throughout the story, there are many purpose of it scattered in the plot. It can be used as a memory preserver, as a key, and many others.
