I would have to say that when poor Will ponders thinks about the evil of the Echo’s law, and tries to figure out who would want to kill a child Sound, has to be my least favorite part of the book.

I was uncomfortable with Emmy ending up in shadow pain.

Maybe I'm too dark but nothing made me uncomfortable in this book.

There was so many painful incidents involving both humans and animals. Echoland did not seem to be a very happy place.`

I was uncomfortable when the keeper gave will's wolf a salty water. I also didn't like the drowning of the puppies.
I agree those were the worst parts, but I was also uncomfortable with Emmy being taken to Shadowpain. That seemed unnecessarily cruel because of how young she was. And her PTSD seems to be unhandled, like she has not had counseling. Those were also uncomfortable for me.
Yeah. Emmy's pain was definitely something that felt unnecessarily cruel.
After reading this I am uncomfortable about reading the book

I haven't yet read this book. But I can't think why i would want to read it now that I hear they have been drowning puppies. No no.
Experience is a harsh tutor for she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards. - Vernon Law

You might as well read about it in a book.

I felt as though there was quite a bit of cruelty that was never explained or used in the story. The wolf puppies at least led to an important realization to Will, but salting the water did not help to develop the plot very far. While, of course, all cruelty leads to a bit of discomfort, I can appreciate that some of it helped drive the story and make points. What I did not appreciate at all was the unnecessary, unexplained acts of cruelty (such as incessant bullying of Brainy or Emmy being tortured for most of her childhood).

He was nothing but cruel, and his presence in the book did not add to the plot at all. He wasn't even made out to be a red herring. His continued job at the orphanage makes me not like the character of Dew Pellucid much either, because why would she tolerate that kind of sadistic behavior?
Yes! This. I kept wondering where he fit into the story.

Will's taming of the wild wolf made me uncomfortable. As someone who's been attacked by starving, wild animals, it didn't feel very comfortable at all.

The killing of the puppies made me cringe!
Also, the mention of cockroaches as pets made me incredibly uncomfortable.
So yes!
The book made me uncomfortable.

Same with the Fate Sealers that were allowed to just casually walk around and torture the students.

Absolutely any part where the animals were at risk of being harmed were really uncomfortable for me. I despise people who are able to hurt animals and I won't watch movies or TV where animals are harmed. It made it really hard to continue reading.

I think in a book like this there has to be some disturbing moments. The evil that the character needs to confront and fight must be revealed. Most great children's stories have scary and/or disturbing scenes. I don't think this book was any more disturbing than many other young adult books I have read, and I have read hundreds. The courage of the hero cannot be revealed without also revealing at least a glimpse of the darkness he must fight.
