Young Adult Book Recommendations

Post by Heidi M Simone »

Young adult is a genre that is geared towards people from ages 12-18, however, there are many adult who read and enjoy this genre, as well (me included!).

This genre is meant to help smooth over the transition from childhood to adulthood for its younger readers. Typically, the topic at hand follows the experiences of a young adult protagonist. Within this vast genre, several other genres can be woven into the text.

Here some of my personal recommendations: :reading-4:
  • The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
  • A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
  • The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
  • The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
  • Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
  • Divergent by Victoria Roth
  • The Giver by Lois Lowry
  • His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
Here is a Goodreads list: https://www.goodreads.com/list/tag/young-adult

You can also check out the YA books that have been reviewed by the OBC Review Team: viewforum.php?f=53

Do you have any YA recommendations for others?

The Shades Of Magic series by V.E. Schwab is pretty creative and cool!

The Daughter Of Smoke and Bone series by Laini Taylor is also great. Both series are a bit angsty and love triangley, but it seems to be impossible to find any young adult books that aren’t these days.

I haven't heard of The Shades Of Magic series. What's it about?

The Daughter Of Smoke and Bone is one that I've started, but haven't finished. I really liked the first one, but the second one took a little longer to finish for. I should, though, definitely make sure to finish up the trilogy at some point!

Yeah, I think you're right, it's hard to find a YA series/book that doesn't have some angst and love triangle to it.

Oh! I also loved Birthday by Meredith Russo. It's about these two boys who have been friends since birth and how the years have changed their friendship. One of the boys realizes that perhaps he wasn't meant to be born a boy, but born a girl instead. It's really good!

Shades of Magic is a bit odd in that the premise is that there are four parallel Londons. Two have different kinds of magic, one has no magic, and one (Black London) is dead because magic destroyed it. Someone smuggled a dangerous Black London relic out somehow (it’s meant to be inaccessible, even to the magicians who can cross between the others Londons) and it starts causing mayhem. Don’t wanna give too much away but the world building is excellent!

Odd is fine with me! I love fantasy, especially when there is good world building. I've added to my to-read list. Thank you for the recommendation!

Indeed! :)

We need more hours in the day to read them all!

The perks of being a wallflower is so related to high school. It always takes you back to the old time whenever you read, and I am loving it.

Ah, I forgot about that one! It's been a while since I've read it, but I remember really liking it. Great recommendation! :tiphat:
