This book is very well written and I enjoyed every part. The descriptions of war were well done and accurate. I like how it brings veterans issues to the forefront because it’s an important topic we don’t often discuss. Highly recommend to others.

I am not gonna finish the book. I feel that at this time I cannot stomach another war book. Although this is a good book. Maybe I will give it another go at some other time. I just want to say that the author did do a good job.

I rated this book 4 out of 4 stars because the author did a great job in rewriting the history of the Vietnam Veterans' circumstances. I don't even know about Agent Orange and its aftermath without reading this book. I'm glad the author wrote this book on behalf of his colleagues.

I just finished the book, and I haven't posted my review yet, but I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. Overall, I think it's very well-written. The author's choice to tell the story from Zack's perspective is something I appreciated, especially in the beginning of the story; since Zack was a "newbie," it allowed readers to learn about the operation of a ship right along with him. Something that I disliked was the length. I felt that some of the middle section could have been cut out. I kept waiting for the effects of Agent Orange to be discussed, and I think that there were a lot of unnecessary parts in the middle that ended up feeling like filler. Still, I enjoyed the book and thought the author did an exceptional job.

I did think it was very beautiful that he chose to honor his fellow servicemen in that way! I also didn't know about Agent Orange, so it was a really informative read.

I agree that the author used the descriptions to really wonderful effect. War novels are not usually my preference, but everything felt realistic, and the characters were very engaging. Although it was hard to read the dialogue sometimes, I did think that it helped make each character unique and memorable.

Deadly Waters: The Vietnam Naval War And Its Aftermath by Randy Miller. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for its authenticity. After reading it, you understand that the sea is a perilous place, even for someone with years of training. I liked the conversational tone and changes in dialect. I liked the relationship between Zach and Tally. I note the coarse, profane language, but it brought the dialogue alive. I recommend the book for its living testimony to a bureaucratic VA and the lack of appreciation for our armed services and first responders from half the population of America.

I am totally blind on Agent Orange, too. The sad fact is Agent Orange still affects the contaminated areas as well as the contaminated soldiers. It is very disgusting to see the babies born after the Vietnam war. 50 decades are not enough yet to totally dissolve the dioxin on the ground, maybe, and the genes of the contaminated person

I am not a big fan of war novels but based on the reviews, I might read and enjoy this. I can't wait to read this.

War stories are always hard to read, but one usually comes away inspired by the courage of those who sacrifice and serve despite major obstacles. This book captured a slice of American history very thoroughly through its deep characterization and description of civilian and military culture and attitudes. Dialect is always a great way to enrich characterization, but it can sometimes be hard to achieve in print. Mr. Miller pulled it off superbly. Mr. Miller also gave very detailed and descriptive portrayals of what it is actually like to serve and fight onboard a Naval vessel. I enjoyed the book, but I did not enjoy the ending, and actually felt that it was not consistent with the main character's personality. In some ways, the story smacked of mild propaganda, leading the reader to the author's chosen conclusion. For any veterans, I would warn them away from the VA and encourage them to get help outside of their system, as it is a large socialist bureaucracy that does not have a good track record in effectively treating the servicemen in their care. I think Mr. Miller could have made his case stronger if he had included a little more information about Dioxin, its uses, and consequences. I would have enjoyed reading more about the people inside the VA who were battling to help the vets in their claims. Overall though, it's a good book and a beautiful snapshot of American life during the Viet Nam War.

Although, I feel that this was a little slow and dull for my liking. I still give it a 3 out of 4-stars rating. It is sad for the vets to spend their whole lives fighting for a country that basically shows them that their efforts didn't mean a thing when it comes to spending the money that they need for their families or medical bills.

I believe, very important is that the author is a Vietnam War veteran himself. Thus his perspective is really unique.
