I don't mind that they did stuff separately. To me their relationship was one sided because I felt Kelly did everything for Tom.He was kind of indifferent. Overall, I was missing the connection between them. Nevermind that they are newlyweeds.

I think the author was too caught up in the intrigue of the main storyline that she took the romantic aspects of their relationship a bit for granted.

As I’m giving this second novel a try after reading another book by this author, I’m finding that she has a tendency to not develop her characters and their relationships that great. In the prior one, a woman has a one night stand that turns into this weird relationship. This one, they are married and reflect some of the same characteristics as the one night stand couple. There’s just no depth so far as I see.

And, they generally only get to that point after a few years of being together. It seems like a major red flag to go on your honeymoon and choose to do things separately.
I absolutely agree! While every relationship has its own path, there’s something to be said for preferring solo activities on a honeymoon 😬

That is, one of the surprising moments I've encountered in the book. I mean, wow could someone really do that? They were suppose to be together

It was a little strange that they were doing things independently on their honeymoon. I had a bigger problem with the fact that they didn't discuss Kelly's attack until after they watched a TV show. That's so unrealistic.

Tom and Kelly’s relationship could have been better developed. However, overall, I am not a big fan of the book’s premise itself. Kelly is acting abnormal and her husband still wants to go fishing? I am unable to digest this! Cold relationship? I would say yes!

It did seem a strange relationship, but definitely far-fetched from my personal view of a honeymoon or the relationship of a couple. Cold, distant, way too focused on spending time alone, especially in a honeymoon, no genuine concern or care for the love one - it all sensed like spies attitude, covered by their married image.

This was one of my main critiques of the book, the unbelievable romance between the newlyweds. I was ok with the two being separated for an activity, I could see my husband and I doing that for an afternoon, but I was not ok from the lack of knowledge of each other. They didn't even seem to be close friends, let alone hanging off each other like I assume newlyweds to be. They seemed to be acquaintances who sort of knew each other, like awkward roommates at a business conference.

They seem to like each other quite well enough, so I think they just have certain activities that one likes to do but the other doesn't as much, and they agree to let one another have time for their own activities. Sometimes the strongest relationships are based on that sort of understanding.

If the book you're referring to is Cynthia and Dan Cyber War, that book had the most awkward erotic scene I've ever read between Cynthia and Sky Eastman, who is Cynthia's husband in this book. I'm glad the author opted not to be as descriptive with the intimate scenes in this book. She just doesn't have a good command of that sort of scenario. :tiphat:

On top of being cold, the dialogue between them, even when they are acting like a couple, seems cheesy, odd, and somehow robotic.

I felt no connection between Tom and Kelly throughout the plot. Author has focused more on plot rather than Tom and Kelly's relationship.

There was simply no chemistry between Kelly and Tom. Author paid more attention to other parts of the story and their relationship was simply side-swept under the rug.

It wasn’t necessary very cold...it just wasn’t the focus of the novel. I’m thinking the three week honeymoon they received from the president at the end of the book would have revealed more of what we expect from newlyweds. The separate activities at the start of this book were just used as a plot device to leave Kelly vulnerable so she could discover the terrorist activities and have a reason to call her brother, the senator, to get the government involved.
