It’s a good question but I don’t think there’s a way to answer it practically because this book is from the protagonist’s point of view. All we can do is assume what Rachel did but we only know those things that the protagonist knew to be true. And as we can see from the book, assumptions are never a good way to arrive to a decision (same as poor communication).
