True. It sounded like suicide mission.FrankieKelley wrote: ↑03 Jan 2020, 03:00 I wanna say that “go beyond your limits” is one of my personal favorites, in the book and in my own life. I found it inspirational while reading, but it was also hilarious to see what craziness ensued when the characters, especially the boys, attempted to fulfill this rule, and it usually led to not-so-good outcomes within the story.

However, I do like the rules about pushing beyond your limits and traveling under your own power. (As a female, I obviously don't care about rule #1 at all.) Those are rules that empower people and aid in a journey of both discovery and self-discovery.

Wow. I never thought of it that way. Thanks for your input.esp1975 wrote: ↑03 Jan 2020, 17:36 I hate "he who wines loudest wears the pink bracelet". It's such a sign of toxic masculinity. Most women I know bear pain better than men, and whine less than men. It degrades both the color pink and women.

I agree with you on this one. I am only on the fifth mission, but the awarding of the bracelet has been my favorite part so far even though it is very sexist and politically "incorrect".

Skipping a day is okay, but a week. I wonder how the protagonist and his friends coped with the sweaty smell after a long day of activities.

That's a good idea. But then the game wouldn't be fun.

According to the story, there were challenging situations like trekking over long distances, biking, eating strange food and the like, so there is one person who is bound to complain/wine about something at some point, hence the pink bracelet...Nerea wrote: ↑02 Jan 2020, 02:45I agree. It's like men are meant to keep their pain to themselves But why?LeDiplomatique wrote: ↑02 Jan 2020, 00:01 'He who whines loudest wears the pink bracelet' sounds interesting. It's like saying that only girls are allowed to whine. I have been trying to imagine one of the guys trekking with a sprained foot and claiming he is okay while the pain escalates. It's a manly thing though, a girl would scream the hills down.
This book somewhat reminds me of a movie called Tag.

This is a very considerate rule since they'd be spending time in remote places.

After finishing the book, I realized that this rule is laden with meaning. The way they were against whining, translates to the narrator's confession that he was made to believe that it is not okay for a man to cry. It was so heartwarming how Alec gets to the point of taking on the pink bracelet readily and unashamed.
