We were unfortunately not able to cross the Bloukrans River as it was high tide when we reached it. We had to hike up and out of the canyon and get lifted to the overnight hut by the rangers.

Yeah, Machu Picchu is near the top of my bucket list, too. I wish the author had spent more time describing each of the locations. That is really my favorite part of any book about travel.sevencrows wrote: ↑22 Jan 2020, 13:03 Unfortunately I haven't been to any of them in person, but the descriptions were stunning and Machu Pichu sounds so interesting and I'd love to go someday.

This sounds amazing! South Africa is definitely on my bucket list!mary-annef wrote: ↑21 Jan 2020, 13:26 I've hiked the Otter Trail in South Africa. It's an enormous privilege as a maximum of 12 visitors are allowed into the reserve per day (so 36 in total at any one time across the four days of the hike). Uliel is expansive in his praise of the varied landscape and extensive animal life. And he does come close to doing it justice. But, my overriding memory is of the smells and sounds experienced while walking. The dank, musty scent of the forest floor warmed by the morning sun piercing the tree canopy. The chattering monkeys and screeching birds above. Breaking twigs ahead, as startled buck dart off before they are seen. Then the salty smack of the air as you step out onto the beach. And the crash of waves as they break against the cliffs, dimmed by the forest but loud as thunder from the beach.
We were unfortunately not able to cross the Bloukrans River as it was high tide when we reached it. We had to hike up and out of the canyon and get lifted to the overnight hut by the rangers.
