I think it was a combination of all of his experiences that led to his growth.

Starting to put the needs of his family above his own is when the transformation occured. So I would say, it happened on the home front.

During the man missions. It was sort of like therapy and guidance for them. It helped to detach him from real life and give him space to think, and make clear decisions. He also learned a lot during the missions which helped shape his life.

I think the main character had always been a man. This is because of his decision concerning his career, being able to balance fun and life responsibilities. Being a man is more like an attitude.

I think the first change was when he started a family with Rachel because his priorities changed and he now had to take into consideration how she felt about his decisions but the major change was when he realized he had to put his family first always.

Though he thought he'd become a man with the death of his father, I don't agree. The time he became a man was when he accepted his failures and tried to restart his life.

We met the characters in college, so I think it's fair to say they were already young men. The 15-year time span that follows gradually shows their transitions through the stages of adulthood. Therefore I do not think there is a single point where that change occurs.

The protagonist might have thought that he was being a man, when he gave up on his own needs for the sake of his family. But I think he actually became a man, when he started to understand himself after his divorce.

I believed his transition to becoming a man was partly because of the Man Missions.

I think the man in him came out when he acknowledged his weakness and admitted his mistakes

It was in his home life, when he started having issues in his marriage, he saw his mistakes and he grew through that phase.

I actually don't think he actually became a man. Everything that went wrong in his life was as a result of him being immature and putting his happiness first. I actually don't think he learned anything important, maybe that he rushed into marriage with Rachel when he could have been skydiving somewhere with his buddies.
I'm here for a good time, not a long time. Yolo!

I think every expedition he embarked on was very instrumental to his transition. As the story progressed I could sense him become more mature and manly.
