Good point. I can't decide if they added to my enjoyment or understanding, but it was an interesting technique.Laura Bach wrote: ↑11 Jan 2020, 03:34 I don't know much about the biblical passages. They were definitely foreshadowing some events in the chapter, but I would've liked the book as much without them.

The verses did capture my attention.Nickolas Farmakis wrote: ↑19 Jan 2020, 08:38 I think they add value to the text, as Bible verses always create a sense of motivation and encouragement.

I hadn't thought about the author's religion. I was focused on the narrator and his persona. Since he used quite a bit of profane language, I thought the verses were a bit out of character.

Nice analysis.Mjgarrison wrote: ↑13 Jan 2020, 14:54 I enjoyed the quotes from the Bible, It made me feel like the author was putting scripture that meant something deep to him. I did think it was kind of weird the language that was used throughout the story paired with the scripture at the beginning. But all in all I think adding the scripture was good.

Maybe the author's message was that the characters should have heeded biblical advice.

I agree. The quotes in my opinion were an interesting literary device that served to deepen immersion through foreshadowing.pshaw1414 wrote: ↑08 Jan 2020, 15:33 Personally, I am not religious. But I felt that the author adding both a famous quote and a biblical quote before each mission made the story a bit more personal to him. I wasn't affected or bothered by it a bit. I feel like if one is adamant about not reading biblical passages, they could opt to only read the famous quote above it and receive the same message.

I agree with you, but I did wonder if the passages were fitting with the profane dialogue used in the book.adamgreenrock wrote: ↑23 Jan 2020, 05:13 While I'm not really a religious person, I found those passages to be fitting with the theme of the book.

It really depends on your view of that specific religion. While I don't know if swearing is considered a sin in the bible, the passages themselves are more of how you take it to heart or how the characters' actions are fit in those passages.diana lowery wrote: ↑23 Jan 2020, 11:22I agree with you, but I did wonder if the passages were fitting with the profane dialogue used in the book.adamgreenrock wrote: ↑23 Jan 2020, 05:13 While I'm not really a religious person, I found those passages to be fitting with the theme of the book.
