This is an interesting point, though. Thanks for raising it up. Well, for me, outdated it may be, but I think the author has his reasons for using this as an element in the story.
Happy reading,

Does anyone else think we could have gotten something new?

And who else felt the storyline of the 15 Man Missions were redundant? We all knew injuries would be sustained and there would be run-ins with nefarious actors. Maybe 5 Man Missions would have sufficed?

Curious to know if anyone else had these thoughts...
I actually don't agree with you. I don't think there's a need to 'escape' the 'bro culture' as you put it. Obviously any toxic masculinity trait should not be acceptable but I feel like guys should be allowed to do and have their thing. I mean we girls also have our things and trips like girls' night out or no boys allowed.

After thinking for a while, I also felt the few elements in the Man Mission is somewhat outdated. But I don't think that affects my reading experience.

I disagree. Adventures and boyhood have been analogous since times immemorial. Traveling with friends, and the concept of "workation" is even more popular after the pandemic.

Outdated or not I think it's still legitimate because it's his experience, you know. That's who he is and that's what happened to him.

I am neutral towards this opinion. All it mattered to me is their friendship and the amusing Man missions along with the adventure.

I thought Man Mission was outdated because of the common injuries usually sustained annually. Also it was odd because these members should stick to taking care of their families and we saw that caused between the author and Rachel.

I don’t think outdated is the right word, maybe old fashioned yes.

Really, I don't think so. It's really a good novel. But yeah I felt 15-man missions are sometimes tiring. But its a fun read i didn't expect much either. Overall its a good one.

Krishalliday wrote: 06 May 2020, 16:11 I definitely see what you are saying about the “bro” culture, BUT I think that was the point of the book, to challenge society’s view on what it means to be a “man”. I liked how he learned by the end that it is important to be vulnerable, open, and present in all moments of life. I thought the man missions were very symbolic of the struggles he was going through in his day to day life. I thought it was very relatable and I am a woman 🤷🏽‍♀️
Exactly my thought. Thanks for such a nice comment.

I didn't have the feeling at all that Man Mission was outdated. I found it interesting to be a "fly on the wall" to a "guy trip" through this story since I have traveled a lot with my female friends, and it was fun to consider the differences between the "man missions" and what my trips have looked like.

While it feels outdated to use bro culture, it did not bother me. I was too engrossed with the story.
