Users of the Mind takes place in a school where gifted children, mostly from wealthy backgrounds, are trained in the art of the mind, which they can use to control the actions of people around them and aid them in their rise to power. The school is ran by a mysterious man known only as Teacher, and after the students fully learn the arts of the mind and graduate, Teacher will place the highest achievers among the leaders of society so he can use them to influence the world according to his plans, which only he knows the details of.

Michael is an exceptional student who has great natural talent as a mind user. He is also Teachers favorite student and gets private lessons to help him excel even further, but he has a strong fear of death, and decides to use his powers to accumulate a fortune that he can use for medical research to try and make himself live forever. Michael tries to get Teacher to join him, but after Teacher sees the innocent people that are suffering at Michael's hand he turns on him and leaves him to die.

Michael escapes though and is out for revenge, and with Teacher being the only one knowing of his abilities and his plans, he is the only one who can stand in his way.

This book deals with the topic of mind control, but does it in a very smart and interesting way. I really enjoyed how the author went about it in a psychological way, with the characters using subtle body language, certain ways of phrasing things, and other various methods to control people. Due to this I was constantly wondering exactly how much control the characters had of themselves, and how much their actions were being controlled by those around them. This makes the characters seem more methodical in their actions, and it keeps suspense built up throughout the entire story.

I also really enjoyed the characters in this book, and the constant struggles they faced, whether the struggles be with themselves, with nature, or with each other.

I feel this book deserves 4 out of 4 stars, not only was it well written with smart and interesting characters, but it also had a constant level of suspense that made you want to keep reading, making it tough to put down.
