"Living and Dying in Brick City" by Sampson Davis

Post by Loveabull »

A follow up to "The Pact"-three friends who make a promise that they will each successfully grow beyond their upbringings. Sampson Davis is a physician in residence at University Hospital in Newark New Jersey. Each chapter highlights specific health concerns of the African American community, opening with his patient experiences and closing with informative endnotes and resources.

It's an powerful book for anyone wanting to gain insight on the glaring flaws of the U.S. health care system. It explores African American culture and it's relation to the medical community. The author speaks from his experience in an inner city hospital. To understand the experience that is Newark I think back to an announcement that made front page news several years ago. The mayor was quoted as saying how proud he was that the city had gone 30 days without a homicide
" The writer must write what he has to say, not speak it."
